“Nimepanga Hiyo Ikulu, Nimeieweka Mitego Kila Corner”: How DP Gachagua’s Traps to Nab Raila at State House Fizzled

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is currently embroiled in a significant political upheaval.

His efforts to completely exclude opposition leader Raila Odinga from both the government and State House have been unsuccessful.

The strategic alliance between Raila and President William Ruto has left Gachagua with limited options, forcing him to decide whether to resist or align himself.

“Nimepanga hiyo Ikulu, nimeieweka mitego kila corner, kila corner…na niko na watu wakionekana tu karibu napigiwa simu kwa sababu huwezi kubali mtu ameharibu serikali nne aingie ya tano,” said Gachagua in past address.

“Mimi nalala na jicho moja ingine nalala ikiwa on. Nikisikia maneno nakimbia hapo hii serikali tulitafuta na shida nyingi sana hatuwezi kubali mtu aharibu.”

For Gachagua, a significant system breakdown could be reported. The supposed barriers around the State House designed to keep Raila out seem to have failed dramatically.

“Juzi nimeenda ng’ambo, nimeenda Italy, wanajaribu kupitia huko…nikarudi haraka, he is a Saul who has now become a Paul,” Gachagua stated in the past.

Upon taking the oath of office as Deputy President, Gachagua immediately demonstrated a pronounced tendency toward political partisanship.

“This government belongs to shareholders,” he remarked then, statements which drew intense public ire.

President Ruto’s commitment to a broad inclusivity strategy, which now includes even the opposition he previously opposed, might challenge his previous shareholder position.

“Nawaambiia hawa watu wa upinzani hakuna serikali ya nusu mkate,” Ruto has previously said in a public address.

While the President has softened his previous firm position against opposition leader Raila, his deputy has remained noticeably silent, leaving Raila optimistic about potential collaboration.

Political analysts suggest that Gachagua’s actions might be part of a strategic and deliberate plan.

On February 26th, Raila and President Ruto had a meeting with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni at his residence.

Images of the meeting appeared online, much to the dismay of the Deputy President’s supporters.

The political undertones of the meeting took Gachagua by surprise, leading him to intensify his comments against any power-sharing agreement.

“Mzee wa kitendawili amenikuta kwa mazishi juzi hapo Nyayo akaniuliza nini mbaya, kwani unaongopa mazungumzo? Nikamwambia mimi siogopi mazungumzo, yule mtu naogopa ni wewe!” Gachagua stated previously.

Gachagua and Raila have interacted amicably in public, although they have exchanged political barbs on various platforms.

“When you are bitten by a black snake, even when you see a black pot you run away. Sisi tunakuogopa. Uhuru was my best buddy lakini wakati alishikana na wewe akataka kunifunga,” noted Gachagua.

A recent conflict between President Ruto and his deputy Gachagua has pushed the Deputy President to the brink. His alliances with Raila within Ruto’s close circle could result in him losing out on some shares.

“Ile kitu hatupendi ni usaliti…ukitusaliti tunakuchukia,” Gachagua declared in the past.

Gachagua is now lauding Interior CS nominee Kithure Kindiki and his expected return to the Cabinet, despite their previous disagreements.

Previously, Gachagua had charged CS Kindiki with hindering his efforts against illegal alcohol.

As political discussions in the nation increasingly benefit the opposition, the situation may change shortly.

Raila’s 2018 agreement with Uhuru Kenyatta caused a rift between the then-President and his deputy, William Ruto.
