NHIF Says Fire Outbreak at Its Headquarters Caused by Power Surge

The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) management has revealed that a fire that broke out at its Upper Hill building was due to a power surge.

In a statement, the Fund explained that the fire which broke out on Saturday evening was contained promptly.

NHIF further noted that no major property or documents were destroyed in the incident.

“NHIF wishes to notify the public of a small fire at the NHIF building on Saturday night due to an unexpected power surge. In response, the NHIF administration team contacted the local fire department and activated our backup generator to ensure smooth continuity of operations,” read the statement in part.

“The fire was promptly contained, with no significant damage to the facility or the critical systems that could affect services to Kenyans.”

The fund, as a result, launched investigations to establish the root cause of the fire to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future.

    Increased Fires in Nairobi

The minor fire outbreak came two months after a fire in Mukuru Kwa Njenga razed down at least 200 households, leaving families in the informal settlement stranded.

The June fire began at 8:00 p.m. and saw swift action from the Nairobi County Fire Department.

Fortunately, no life was lost in the incident according to the Kenya Red Cross with the firefighters containing the fire in time.

Casualties from the fire were rushed to Riverside Dispensary where they were treated for minor burns.

โ€œFor the first time, we have witnessed a timely response from Nairobi County on a fire outbreak. Congratulations to the fire and disaster management team,โ€ Kaviti Stellah, one of the victims, stated at the time.

For years, the city’s firefighters had been blamed for late response times.
