Ngilu Challenges Ruto: Raila’s AU Ascent Demands Unity, Not Solo Ventures
Although she praised the President for his decision, Ngilu pointed out that the Opposition collaborates with numerous individuals as well.
“What has shocked me the past few days is the new handshake. Thank you for supporting Baba for the AU chair but you cannot take him alone. He has many other people with him,” she said while addressing the Council of Governors Women caucus launch.
Ngilu observed that if the former Prime Minister had been a woman, he would not have pursued the AU position on his own.
She humorously mentioned that she is still trying to grasp the dynamics of male relationships within leadership.
“I still need to understand and I will study this a little bit to get how this works among male leadership. Women don’t do that.”
The ex-governor urged President Ruto to assist female leaders in rallying support for securing resources to fulfill their visions for the communities they serve.
Ngilu confirmed that irrespective of the political affiliations they individually endorse, the female leaders have unanimously committed to collaborating as a cohesive force for the progress and advancement of the nation.

“I want to ask this for the women. Please help these women to mobilize for resources.”
She encouraged female leaders to broaden their focus beyond achieving a count of 16 elected women governors and strive for a higher number, specifically aiming for 47.
She maintained that having women serve as governors would alleviate the president’s concerns about service delivery, allowing him the opportunity to concentrate on other urgent issues.
“We are talking about increasing women to 16, why not 47? Women will help the president and you will be free,” Ngilu said.
Ngilu was one of the first three women governors in Kenya.
She won the Kitui gubernatorial race in 2017 by defeating the incumbent Julius Malombe.
Nevertheless, in 2022, she opted not to seek re-election and, instead, collaborated with the Azimio presidential campaign team.
