News Anchor Jackie Maribe: Discovering Monica Kimani’s Murder On Air
Jackie Maribe, a former television news anchor on trial for the murder of Monica Kimani, told a Nairobi court on Thursday that she learned of the businesswoman’s death while watching the evening news.
She told trial judge Grace Nzioka that on the evening of September 19, 2018, the alleged date of Monica’s brutal murder, she was at the studios of Royal Media Services conducting interviews until midnight.
Then, she and her guests, Juliet Julie aka Juju, Chelangat Ruto, and Anita Thumbi, left the company’s premises.
Mike Sonko, the former governor of Nairobi, joined the group after they had left. She stated that they remained in the club until 4:00 a.m.
In addition, she testified that she was carless that evening.
Through her attorney Katwa Kigen, she informed the court that at the time, she shared her Royal Park Apartment home in Lang’ata with the first defendant, her ex-lover Joseph Irungu a.k.a. Jowie.
She stated that he would drop her off and pick her up from work using her vehicle, and he would have the vehicle the rest of the time.

Previously, police had stated that Jowie was driving the vehicle when he was spotted at Monica’s Kilimani residence the day before her body was discovered.
“After dropping me off at my place of employment, he would leave, and I lost control of the vehicle,” Maribe told Justice Nzioka.
She also testified that she was unfamiliar with the late Monica Kimani and her residence.
She further stated that she neither participated in nor witnessed Jowie burning clothes outside her apartment.
“Is this your proof to the court that you know nothing about Monicah’s murder?” Kigen asked her.
“I do not know Monicah’s death, and I did not kill her. I discovered her passing while reading a news bulletin. Maribe pleaded with the court to acquit her as she concluded her defense.
After the conclusion of the defense hearing, Justice Nzioka ordered Prof. Hassan Nandwa for Jowie, Kigen for Maribe, and the prosecution to submit written arguments.
She set the case for mention on June 26, 2023, allowing the parties to make closing arguments before she determines a date for judgment delivery.
