National Assembly Confirms Dr. Patrick Omwanda Amoth as Director-General for Health
The National Assembly has sanctioned Dr. Patrick Omwanda Amoth’s appointment as Director-General for Health after a favorable nod from the Health Committees of both the National Assembly and the Senate.
The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health and the Senate Standing Committee on Health underscored Dr. Amoth’s extensive expertise and experience, noting his four-year tenure in an acting capacity. They affirmed his fulfillment of all statutory and constitutional criteria for the position.
Endebess MP Robert Pukose, who heads the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health, stressed Dr. Amoth’s adherence to all legal prerequisites during a special motion on Wednesday.
Dr. Pukose remarked, “After assessing Dr. Amoth’s suitability, competence, experience, and integrity, and considering the Committees’ observations and findings, under the Constitution, Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act, (Cap. 7 F), Health Act (Cap. 241), National Assembly Standing Orders, and Senate Standing Orders, we recommend Parliament approve Dr. Patrick Omwanda Amoth, EBS, as the Director General for Health under Section 16 of the Health Act (Cap. 241).”
“The Committees further observed that the nominee satisfactorily addressed the concerns raised in the memorandum received,” he added.

Supporting the motion, Chuka Igambang’ombe MP Patrick Munene Ntwiga lauded Dr. Amoth for his patience and extended service in an acting role.
“I inform this House and the nation that we finally have a leader in Dr. Amoth who will steer the Ministry of Health as the Director-General, providing solid counsel and advice to the Cabinet Secretary,” said Munene. “Having known Dr. Amoth for quite some time, I can attest to his experience, knowledge, and dedication to the Ministry of Health. His global networks will benefit our country. Dr. Amoth commands respect and authority within the Ministry of Health,” he added.
Munene urged Dr. Amoth to guide the incoming Cabinet Secretary for Health, should she be approved, highlighting the significant guidance needed in the ministry. He emphasized that Dr. Amoth is one of the few with a deep understanding of the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Amoth brings over 30 years of experience in health systems management, reproductive health, and public health at community, national, regional, and global levels. He has been the acting Director-General for Health since January 2020.
During his tenure, he developed critical national and international health policies, including Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage roadmap, the introduction of Pneumococcal vaccines, and the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.
