National Assembly Approves Abdi Mohamud Ahmed as New CEO of EACC

The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs approved Abdi Mohamud Ahmed’s appointment as the new chief executive officer of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on December 4, 2024.

While introducing the motion in Parliament, Vice Chairperson Mwengi Mutuse confirmed the committeeโ€™s approval of Ahmedโ€™s appointment, stating that the committee had reviewed and agreed on his candidacy for the role.

Mutuse emphasized the thorough vetting process conducted by the committee, assuring the public that all legal requirements were satisfied during the evaluation.

The lawmaker also noted that Ahmed met all the necessary constitutional and legal criteria, particularly in accordance with Article 250 Sub-article 12 of the Constitution and Section 16(1) of the EACC Act, as well as the Public Appointments Parliamentary Approval Act.

According to Mutuse, Ahmed appeared before the committee, which was impressed by his qualifications for the position.

The nominee was selected through an open, competitive process, in full compliance with legal standards, Mutuse affirmed.

The committee also expressed satisfaction that Ahmed met constitutional and legal requirements regarding citizenship, leadership, ethics, integrity, and tax compliance.

This approval is a significant step for the EACC, an agency responsible for addressing corruption and promoting ethical standards in public service.

Created by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Act, the EACC is vital in investigating corruption, educating the public on integrity, and ensuring compliance with anti-corruption laws.

Once confirmed by the National Assembly, Mohamud will assume leadership of the EACC in 2025, taking over from Twalib Mbarak, who served a six-year term starting in January 2019.

Mohamud was among the 172 applicants initially considered for the role, later shortlisted to 14 candidates, with him chosen as the best fit to succeed Mbarak.

His appointment is timely, coinciding with growing demands for increased transparency and accountability in government institutions.
