Natembeya Claims Government Tried to Kill Him at Chebukati’s Funeral
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has accused the Kenyan government of plotting to kill him. He made these shocking claims during a public event in Trans Nzoia on Friday, March 28, 2025.
Natembeya Says His Life is in Danger
Governor Natembeya claimed that an attempt on his life was made during the funeral of former IEBC Chairman, Wafula Chebukati, on March 8, 2025. He believes the government targeted him because of his constant criticism of President William Ruto’s leadership.
Speaking at a fertilizer distribution event, Natembeya said:
“The government is not good. It has bad people. Recently at Chebukati’s funeral, they almost killed me. They placed thugs there. That’s when I realized they can kill me anytime.”
He added that even if he dies, he hopes the people will remember his words and continue fighting for justice.
Accusations of Government Assassinations
The governor went further and claimed that the Kenyan government is involved in killing people who oppose them.
“That’s the truth. The government kills people. I know they can kill me too. But even if I go, remember what I told you,” he warned.
Despite these threats, Natembeya promised he will not stop speaking against the government.
Calls for Justice and Change in Leadership
Natembeya urged President Ruto to allow someone else to lead the country in 2027.
“If you want to come for me, come. But justice must be done in Kenya. Mr. President, your government is troubling you. You keep dissolving the Cabinet. In 2027, step aside and let someone capable lead Kenya,” he said.
However, he also made it clear that he respects President Ruto and does not hate him.
“The President is human like me. He eats, drinks, dreams, and sleeps like I do. There’s no need to fear each other.”

Security Concerns at Chebukati’s Funeral
Chebukati’s burial in Sabata village, Trans Nzoia, was attended by many leaders, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula. Security was tight during the event due to fears of political fights.
Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi had earlier warned politicians not to use the funeral for political drama. He even banned party clothes at the event.
Natembeya and Wetang’ula’s Long Rivalry
Governor Natembeya and Speaker Wetang’ula have a history of political rivalry, especially over who controls politics in Western Kenya. Their supporters have clashed in the past, including at a funeral in March 2024 where police had to intervene.
Natembeya has accused Wetang’ula of focusing on personal interests instead of helping the people. In 2024, he claimed Wetang’ula tried to stop him from running for governor, promising him a ministerial job instead.
What This Means for Kenya’s Politics
Natembeya’s fresh claims of an assassination plot have shocked many Kenyans and raised fears about the safety of opposition leaders. His statements have added new tension to Kenya’s already heated political scene, especially ahead of the 2027 elections.
