Nairobi Protesters Clash with Police in Tear Gas Confrontation
As Azimio la Umoja-called demonstrations began in Nairobi’s central business district, there is a standoff between police and protesters.
To disperse protesters throughout the city, police have been engaged in running battles involving tear gas.
A delegation of Azimio MPs led by Senator Edwin Sifuna of Nairobi stormed the Kenyatta International Convention Centre at approximately 10:00 a.m. (KICC).
As tear gas was launched, the senator and the protesters fled, and those who had begun to gather outside the KICC also took cover.
In the Kibra Constituency, protesters blocked roads and threw rocks at police officers who had been deployed there. Kibra is one of Raila Odinga’s strongholds as leader of the Azimio.
As Kibra protesters attempted to open the barricaded roads, armored police vehicles and heavily armed police officers engaged them in battle.
In the Congo neighborhood of Kawangware, three protesters were arrested as police dispersed crowds that had gathered to participate in the demonstrations. There is a large security presence in the area to repel the protests.

Charged protesters have taken to the streets of Kisumu City. The protesters lit bonfires in Kondele, a Kisumu neighborhood notorious for Raila Odinga supporters. Several bodaboda riders led other protesters in amplifying their message by serving as spokespersons.
In Kitale, pro-Azimio protesters took to the streets amidst a heavy police presence.
Other regions of the nation were relatively tranquil. It was business as usual in Kapsabet town and the central business district of Mombasa city.
Azimio protests the high cost of living in Kenya and has argued that President William Ruto is illegally in office.
In addition to a reduction in the cost of living, the opposition is demanding that IEBC’s servers be made accessible for auditing the August 2022 election results.
