Nairobi Inferno: 200 Homes Devoured by Night Fire
On Sunday, July 23, a nighttime fire in Mukuru Kwa Njenga destroyed at least 200 homes, displacing families in the informal settlement.
The Kenya Red Cross, which responded to the incident, stated that preliminary investigations have not determined the cause of the fire that began around 8:00 p.m.
The Nairobi County Fire Department responded, extinguishing the fire in the informal settlement to prevent its spread.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, no lives were lost in the nighttime incident. An official noted that the response was prompt and the fire was contained before it could cause catastrophic damage.
The fire was contained by the County Fire Brigade with assistance from RCAT and the National Police Service, according to a portion of a statement from Kenya Red Cross.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, community members, and other organizations active in the region assisted with the operation.
The victims of the fire were hurried to the Riverside Dispensary for treatment of minor burns.
“For the first time, we have witnessed Nairobi County’s prompt response to a fire outbreak. Kaviti Stellah stated, “Congratulations to the fire and disaster management team.”
Kenya Red Cross stated that its Nairobi team was conducting an assessment of support requirements.
There have been numerous fires in the region. In November 2022, a fire in the same region claimed the lives of a 40-year-old mother and her son.
At the time, police investigators determined that a defective cooking gas cylinder caused the fire.
In March 2023, a two-year-old girl perished in the same location after a fire broke out. During the catastrophe, over 40 residences were also destroyed by fire.
