Mystery as Kenyan Athlete Willy Chelewa Collapses and Dies
The athletics community in Kenya has faced a tragic loss, as a runner collapsed and died suddenly on Monday at a hotel in Elgeyo Marakwet shortly after drinking a cup of black tea.
The athlete, Willy Chelewa, fell unconscious just days after securing a sponsorship deal with a Chinese company for international competitions.
Sources reveal that the 20-year-old was using the hotel as a base while training with other athletes in the area, known for its numerous training camps.
Following his death, hotel management informed the authorities, who promptly arrived at the scene.
Police Commander Peter Mulinge confirmed that the athlete died after consuming black tea and rice at a hotel in Kaptagat.

An investigation has been launched by the police, who are stationed at the hotel to determine the cause of death.

The athletics community and Chelewa’s family are in mourning, with calls for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Recently, Chelewa competed in the Nairobi City Marathon half-marathon, finishing in 67th place.
His death follows closely after the tragic death of Rebecca Cheptegei, who was killed by her fiancé in a domestic dispute.
