My Net Worth is Sh214m – Agriculture CS Nominee Karanja

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary nominee Dr. Andrew Mwihia Karanja has disclosed that his net worth is Ksh.214 million, which includes various investments and property holdings.

During his appearance before the Committee on Appointments for vetting on Friday, Dr. Karanja explained that his wealth is derived from family homes, vehicles, land plots, and bank savings.

This disclosure is in accordance with the Public Office Ethics Act of 2003, which mandates that all public officials declare their financial status, including income, assets, and liabilities.

Dr. Karanja stated, “My net worth is Ksh.214 million, encompassing family residences, apartments, vehicles, land plots, and bank deposits.”

Throughout the session, MPs inquired if Dr. Karanja would be able to resist potential temptations from cartels at Kilimo House if appointed.

Kathiani MP Robert Mbui asked, “Given your net worth of Ksh.214 million, cartels may offer you billions within the next three years. Will you be able to resist such offers?”

Dr. Karanja assured that accountability is non-negotiable for him and he is committed to maintaining his principles of public service. He acknowledged that resisting corruption will be challenging and prayed for divine support to uphold his values.

He pledged to take a firm stance against cartels, promising that they would be eliminated from the sector if he takes office.

“I recognize the challenge posed by cartels in various forms. However, if confirmed, I’m putting cartels on notice—they will be out of business. Integrity is a core principle for me and will not be compromised,” he affirmed.

Regarding the fertilizer scandal during former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi’s tenure, Dr. Karanja vowed to establish a governance framework for fertilizer procurement and distribution.

He plans to form a multi-agency team to ensure the quality of fertilizer supplied to farmers remains uncompromised.

“This is a crucial program central to food security. Given the issues with fertilizer quality caused by cartels, I will address this issue directly if approved. Cartels thrive where there is a lack of competition and transparency,” he concluded.
