Murkomen Under Fire After Bus Full of Chavakali Boys Overturns Killing 1

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is again on the receiving end of backlash from Kenyans after one student lost his life in Kisumu on Monday, April 1.

Kenyans have called upon the CS to promptly act and liaise with more security personnel to ensure safety on the road.

Taking their complaints online, Kenyans accused CS Murkomen of neglecting the sector and focusing on other issues outside his docket.

The road accident involving an Easy Coach bus carrying students from Chavakali Boys High School when it overturned at Mamboleo in Kisumu County left one dead and others with severe injuries.

According to reports, the driver attempted to negotiate a corner when he lost control, and hit a rail guard, resulting in overturning the vehicle.

The accident occurred at around 9 pm along the Mbale-Nairobi route disrupting traffic before police arrived at the scene. The bus company confirmed the tragic incident.

Following the accident, police revealed that the driver had fled the scene and plans were underway to locate him for questioning.

This was the second accident reported on Monday resulting in fatalities. The other one was reported on Salama road along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway resulting in 10 deaths.

After 11 people lost their lives in one day, the Transport CS has been called out for failing to address the incidents or reveal measures to be taken going forward to avoid similar accidents.

Additionally, the CS was asked to weed out rogue officers from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) who are harassing drivers and collecting bribes to allow unroadworthy vehicles to operate.

Per a section of Kenyans, Murkomen should not continue holding office if the road accidents continue to escalate. They also called upon President William Ruto to act promptly and put capable individuals in the docket in question.

Since the year began, over 40 people have lost their lives to gruesome road accidents including 11 university students from Kenyatta University.

Murkomen had announced new measures including reintroducing NTSA back on the roads and retesting all drivers among others. A proposal has also been fronted to put an age limit to those who can have a driver’s license.
