Murkomen Issues Directive On Driving Licenses And Digital Number Plates

On Saturday, September 23, the Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen ordered the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to clear the accumulation of driving licenses and digital number plates by a certain date.

In a statement issued following an impromptu visit to the NTSA offices in Nairobi, the CS directed that all processed digital license plates be distributed by Monday of the following week.

Several drivers were still awaiting their license plates even though they had already been issued.

He attributed the delays to the bureaucratic procedures implemented by the agency. Murkomen cited the case of Maurice, a motorist from Mombasa who had been informed of the competition but had yet to receive his new license plates.

“I have instructed officials at NTSA – Nairobi to fast-track the delivery process and ensure Maurice receives his digital number plate by Monday next week. This principle should apply to all our customers,” he ordered.

In contrast, he ordered that the inventory of driver’s licenses be cleared up within the next fourteen days.

“It is sad to note that over 50,000 Driving Licence applications, some dating back to September 2022, are yet to be processed.

“I have given NTSA two weeks to clear this backlog, notify Kenyans of their nearest collection points, and put in place the necessary mechanisms to speed up the turnaround time for processing and issuance of DLs and digital number plates,” he directed.

In addition, pending logbooks that have not yet been processed will be cleared within the two-week window.

Murkomen issued the orders following an impromptu visit to NTSA offices in response to complaints about delays in the delivery of essential services.

The CS stated that he was committed to ensuring that Kenyans receive quality services and that mechanisms will be put in place to prevent future delays.

On the other hand, he noted that the DL printer, which lacks the capacity to print the numerous applications submitted on time, would undergo additional modifications.
