Murang’a senator Joe Nyutu: Kenya might burn if Gachagua is arrested
Murang’a County Senator Joe Nyutu has strongly cautioned the government against making the mistake of arresting Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua, saying such a move could “set Kenya on fire.”
Speaking to journalists at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday, August 21, 2025, Nyutu described the former Deputy President as a powerful figure whose political influence cannot be ignored.
He urged authorities to respect due process if they have issues to raise with Gachagua, instead of using force or intimidation. According to him, officials should either summon him formally or wait for him to appear voluntarily.
“You cannot force someone to record a statement,” Nyutu stated. “If they want information from Rigathi Gachagua, they know where he lives. They can call him or tell him where to report—but he cannot be forced.”
The senator also questioned the basis of a possible arrest, wondering whether Gachagua had said anything that was not already known to Kenyans.

“What has he revealed that is new? That the government has links with terrorists? What does the government itself not know? Everyone remembers the President went to Mandera, promised that detained chiefs would be released—and they were released.”
Nyutu warned that arresting Gachagua would not only be politically reckless but also risk plunging the country into chaos.
“Trying to detain Rigathi Gachagua would be like burning Kenya,” he said. “We want to tell the government not to attempt such a move.”
His remarks come at a time of rising political tension, with reports that security agencies are on high alert ahead of Gachagua’s much-anticipated return from the United States.
Supporters of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) have already mobilised thousands to welcome him at JKIA and later at Kamukunji Grounds.
Political analysts say Nyutu’s warning mirrors growing concern among Mt Kenya leaders, who fear that mishandling the Gachagua issue could spark nationwide protests similar to last year’s Gen Z demonstrations.
