Murang’a High School Faces Intense Scrutiny for Alleged NHIF Fund Embezzlement
On Wednesday, the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Health investigated Murang’a High School for allegations of misappropriating funds from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
The committee, headed by Vice Chairperson and Member of Parliament Patrick Munene from Chuka, visited the school’s clinic that caters to both students and staff.
“The committee addressed concerns regarding a significant increase in claims, attributing it to a fee revision from Ksh 500 to Ksh 1000,” read part of a statement from Parliament.
Nevertheless, the school administration separated itself from any involvement in fraudulent actions.
As per Members of Parliament, some individuals within the school facilities administration collaborated with unscrupulous NHIF staff to embezzle funds from the NHIF.
The MPs clarified that the inquiry was comprehensive, encompassing facilities in two counties alleged to have submitted false claims to the NHIF.
The dispensary at Murang’a High School was identified for potential financial irregularities among the facilities under scrutiny.
In Kirinyaga, the team probed two Afya Bora Hospitals during which the committee vice chairperson questioned the management about loopholes in their claims.

According to reports, there were purportedly 22 surgeries performed in a single day at the hospitals, prompting doubts regarding the accuracy of the reports.
“It was noted that the facilities did not meet all the requirements for a Level Four hospital, prompting questions about the licensing process by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board,” the statement read in parts.
The owner disclosed that he terminated 98 staff members because of outstanding payments from the NHIF. Additionally, he refuted all allegations made by the Members of Parliament.
Several healthcare establishments throughout the nation have been alleged to be involved in an intricate plan to deceive the National Health Fund.
In 2023, Susan Nakhumicha, the Health Cabinet Secretary, issued a warning to eight hospitals implicated in a multi-billion scandal, stating that the government was determined to take decisive action against corruption.
At that moment, CS Nakhumicha urged the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to initiate inquiries into the mentioned hospitals and their owners.
