Multiple GSU Officers Injured in Lamu Attack as Vehicle Hits IED on Sunday Morning

At least ten General Service Unit (GSU) officers were injured. When their vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) during an attack in Lamu on June 18 morning.

Gabriel Kioni, the deputy county commissioner for Lamu West. Confirmed the incident and stated that al-Shabaab militants were likely responsible for the attack.

After the vehicle crashed, the militants reportedly engaged the officers in a heated confrontation. However, Kioni stated that there were no reported fatalities in the first incident.

During the attack, a response team from the General Service Unit (GSU). Was ambushed while attempting to rescue the injured officers.

“According to reports, after the vehicle crashed, militants emerged from the forest and attempted to attack the officers. A firefight ensued, with no reported casualties at this time.

“The APC was initially struck by a roadside bomb, and when a Landcruiser team responded, they were also struck, resulting in casualties,” he stated.

Kioni added that GSU officers were conducting routine operations in the Pandanguo region. Which is adjacent to the Boni Forest, where a multi-agency security operation is currently underway.

The operation codenamed Operation Linda Boni began in 2015 to flush out the militants believed to be hiding in the Forest.

In a separate incident that occurred in May 2023, six GSU officers were injured when their vehicle was struck by an IED in Rhamu, Mandera County.

The officers were driving an official vehicle toward Mandera Town when they ran over a planted bomb.

It is believed that al-Shabaab militants operating in the region planted the bomb.

In a statement, the police noted that terrorists have breached security near the Kenya-Somalia border, prompting the deployment of additional officers in the area.

Residents were urged to collaborate with security agencies to combat the trend.
