Mukumu Girls’ High School Deaths Spark Changes
The Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, has announced that Mukumu Girls’ High School Principal, Frida Ndolo, will be replaced by Sr Jane Mmbone Wamukoya.
The announcement was made during Machogu’s visit to the school on Saturday, following the deaths of three students and a teacher, as well as the hospitalization of over 500 students due to food and water contamination at the school.
Ndolo faced criticism after reports of water and food contamination surfaced, resulting in the deaths of two students.
In a circular addressed to parents, she blamed the media for creating a “toxic environment” that led to the school’s closure.
This statement drew further condemnation from the public.
Machogu ordered a new borehole and countywide water treatment to address the crisis.
The school will also receive a Ksh6 million water purification system.

Machogu also said the school would reopen in two weeks and offer counseling to help students cope with the tragedy.
During his visit, Machogu also ordered the destruction of all contaminated food and the procurement of a new consignment.
The Mukumu Girls’ High School incident has raised concerns about school food and water safety nationwide.
Overall, the Education Cabinet Secretary’s actions demonstrate a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students in Kenyan schools.
Preventing future incidents requires replacing the school principal and addressing water and food contamination.
