MP Nimrod Mbai Arrested for Assaulting Kenya Power Employee

Nimrod Mbai, member of parliament for Kitui East, was arrested on Wednesday, July 5. After he was captured on video assaulting a Kenya Power employee.

The lawmaker was apprehended in Mavoko. A day after he was captured on a viral video slapping utility company employees. Who accused him of illegally connecting his Kitengela residence.

According to a police Occurrence Book (OB) obtained by GossipA2Z. The second-term member of parliament was detained at the Kitengela Police Station and will be arraigned at the Kajiado Law Courts.

“Today at approximately 08:00 hours, a group of approximately 30 Kenya Power employees from the Kitengela Branch protested from their officers in EPZ to the Kitengela Police Station against the above MP who assaulted one of them on July 3, 2023,” the OB report stated.

“They demanded to know whether or not the suspect had been captured. They were assured that the suspect had been apprehended and brought before the Kajiado Court.

A separate source told GossipA2Z that the lawmaker turned himself into the police.

The arrest also follows a raid on his Kitengela home on Tuesday evening, during which police officers and Kenya Power employees seized power cables and a meter box, which the company claims were used for an illegal connection to the national grid.

Earlier, the assaulted Kenya Power employees reported the incident to the Kitengela Police, and the head of the Isinya Sub-County Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Benjamin Ndebai, began investigating the matter.

In a videotaped incident, the member of parliament bemoaned the disconnection of electricity at his residence, claiming that the utility company was violating President William Ruto’s directive.

According to Mbai, the area’s residents had been without electricity for years before his intervention.

“President William Ruto issued an order prohibiting the removal of already-installed electrical wires in areas where power is already present. The only requirement is to install a meter, the lawmaker stated.

Kenya Power maintained that it would proceed with the power cutoff at the MP’s residence due to safety concerns.

Additionally, we will remove the entire power line. Officer Peter Kathusia of the utility company asserted that the illegal power line posed a time bomb threat to the occupants of the house.
