MP Fred Kapondi Speaks After Surviving Bungoma Shooting

Fred Kapondi, the Member of Parliament for Mt Elgon, narrowly escaped a shooting incident when he was involved in a violent confrontation with attackers in Bungoma town on the evening of Thursday, August 10th.

Speaking to the media on Friday, the Member of Parliament shared a disturbing series of occurrences. He claimed that he became aware of his life being at risk after he withdrew funds from a bank to buy things for his family.

Kapondi stated that the alleged criminals fired a shot towards the window next to the driver’s position, having parked his vehicle close to the supermarket.

Fortunately, the Member of Parliament had already exited the vehicle and had recently stepped into the shop. Baffled by the occurrence, the legislator contended that he might have been deliberately singled out in the supposed assassination attempt, as he was in control of the car during that period.

The UDA legislator characterized the event as uncommon, as he had never encountered any confrontations with criminals in the past.

“I already recorded my statement with the police. They (thugs) have damaged my car, but I am happy to be alive.

“The police will establish what happened even as I do my own investigations,” the MP stated, adding that the alarming incident left him surprised and shaken.

Furthermore, Kapondi revealed that the criminals forcibly entered his vehicle after realizing his absence, making off with the valuable possessions belonging to the Member of Parliament.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after vigilant onlookers raised the alarm.

Initial findings suggested that the lawmaker was deprived of more than Ksh200,000 in cash during the incident that occurred on Thursday evening.

The authorities examined the location of the incident, secured it from spectators, and carefully searched the vehicle for fingerprints and other important clues that would assist them in resolving the case.

Francis Kooli, the head of police in Bungoma County, verified the occurrence and revealed that highly ranked investigators had already been designated to handle the matter.

He mentioned that the police haven’t found any bullet casings at the location of the crime yet. However, they have confirmed that the Member of Parliament was followed by an as-yet-unidentified car after leaving the bank. This car has not been located or seized yet.

“Before they could go any further, a crowd noticed their activities and raised alarm prompting them to fleed the scene,” Kooli stated.
