Moses Kuria Declares Presidential Bid, Vows to Dethrone Gachagua as Mt Kenya Kingpin
Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has officially declared his presidential ambitions, marking a determined return to the political spotlight just months after his controversial exit from the Cabinet.
Kuria’s announcement introduces fresh intrigue into the political scene, particularly as it follows a public exchange with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, hinting at a possible mending of their once-hostile relationship.
Widely recognized for his provocative rhetoric and resolute positions, Kuria took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express his intentions.
In response to Gachaguaโs call for patience and faith in divine timing, Kuria asserted his belief in his destiny to become the Mt Kenya kingpin and ultimately Kenyaโs sixth president.
“I firmly believe that God will make me the current Mt Kenya kingpin and the 6th President of the Republic of Kenya,” Kuria declared, underscoring his steadfast confidence.
This unexpected declaration follows a turbulent period marked by Kuriaโs sharp criticism of Gachagua.
The two have clashed over several issues, notably Gachaguaโs โone-man-one-shilling-one-voteโ campaign and his public criticism of National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Noordin Haji.
Kuria has been outspoken against Gachaguaโs leadership approach, accusing him of deceit and manipulation, especially regarding the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
Tensions peaked during the violent anti-finance bill protests that shook the nation in June.
As public outrage grew over the billโs proposed VAT hikes on essential items like milk and bread, leading to deadly confrontations, Kuria openly held Gachagua responsible for pushing the original version of the bill, labeling him a “dishonest and dishonorable man” online.

In turn, Gachagua pointed the finger at Haji, blaming the NIS head for failing to provide accurate intelligence that could have prevented the crisis.
The Deputy Presidentโs demand for Hajiโs resignation was widely seen as an attempt to deflect the mounting criticism aimed at both him and the government.
“Haji must be held accountable for the deaths and the security breach at Parliament. He should step down,” Gachagua asserted, escalating the already volatile political environment.
Kuriaโs presidential bid emerges as pressure mounts on Gachagua within the Kenya Kwanza alliance, leading to growing tensions in the party.
Speculation suggests that Gachagua is facing resistance within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) over his perceived ambitions to succeed President Ruto.
By challenging both Gachagua and President Ruto, Kuria is channeling the growing discontent among Kenyans, particularly in light of the Finance Bill and the unrest that followed.
Politically, Kuriaโs move is significant. It signals a possible shift in the Mt Kenya political landscape as he aims to position himself as the region’s new leaderโa region that has historically played a pivotal role in determining Kenyaโs presidential outcomes.
However, the announcement also casts uncertainty on the future of his relationship with Gachagua, a major political force in the region.
