Morara Kebaso Set Free, Charge Sheet Reveals Why He Was Arrested

Morara Kebaso was granted a cash bail of Ksh50,000 on Tuesday shortly after being arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts.

The High Court ordered Kebaso, along with his legal team, to attend a hearing on Friday, October 4, at 2 pm.

In a surprising twist, NARC-Kenya Party leader Martha Karua appeared as Kebaso’s lead counsel, supported by over 10 other lawyers.

The court’s decision came hours after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) brought charges against Kebaso, including cyber harassment under Section 27 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act.

According to the prosecution’s charge sheet, Kebaso was accused of spreading false information about David Langat.

The allegations claimed that Kebaso was attempting to damage the businessman’s reputation and create friction between him and President William Ruto.

The prosecution alleged that Kebaso, through his X account, stated that David Langat took substantial loans to finance President Ruto’s election campaign, expecting reimbursement.

The post also claimed that Langat was facing financial trouble after failing to repay the money used for the campaign.

The charge sheet indicated that “David Morara Kebaso alias Morara Kebaso Snr, on September 28, 2024, at an unknown location within Kenya, along with others not present in court, knowingly posted false information via the X Corp account @MoraraKebasoSnr.”

Kebaso was released just a day after being arrested by individuals believed to be police officers at his Kahawa Sukari office in Nairobi.

Following his arrest, Kebaso’s lawyer followed the police vehicle to the Nairobi Regional Headquarters, where Kebaso was held before being transferred to the DCI Headquarters for his arraignment.

The activist’s lawyer criticized the police for keeping Kebaso incommunicado, stating that the legal team had been denied access to their client.

“They have restricted access and received direct instructions not to allow anyone, including lawyers and media personnel, to see Morara,” the lawyer told journalists.

“The question is, what kind of police do we have here? They have no respect for the constitution or the rule of law,” Kebaso’s lawyer added.
