Moraa’s Sweet Revenge: Dominates 800m at Kip Keino Classic

Kenya’s Naomi Korir was 5th at 2:01.82.

Mary Moraa, the winner of the 800 meters at the Commonwealth Games, defeated Prudence Sekgodiso, the winner of the South African race, to take the title in the specialty event at the Kip Keino classic.

Moraa, who finished third in the world 800m race and was runner-up to Sekgodiso for the title at this same venue a year ago, clocked in at 1 minute, 58.83 seconds when she crossed the finish line.

Netsanet Desta of Ethiopia finished in second place with a time of 2:00.14, and Vivian Chebet Kiproptich of Kenya came in third with a time of 2:00.54.

The result was a letdown for Sekgodiso, who ran the race in a time of 2:01.19 but still managed to place fourth overall.

“Doing this was exactly what I wanted to accomplish, and I can now say that I have,” Moraa said that the revenge was satisfying and that her opponent was not her closest competitor today.

Amos Kirui, a former winner of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the world championships for athletes under the age of 20, won the event.

Kirui won the race by a narrow margin, edging out Abraham Kibiwot, who had previously won a bronze medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games, and Leonard Bett, who had previously won a silver medal in the 3,000-meter race at the world under-20 championships.

Kirui, who was the pre-race favorite, won the race in 8 minutes, 8.45 seconds, with Kibiwot finishing second in 8 minutes, 9.71 seconds, and Bett rounding out the podium in 8 minutes, 10.02 seconds.

This was one of the more challenging competitions I’ve participated in this year, but I was able to come out on top.

Kirui stated, “I had very strong competitors who kept me on my toes, but I managed to win.”
