Mob Justice Token Thieves Busted and Beaten by Angry Residents in Kerugoya
Kerugoya, Kenya – Two daring criminals who thought they could mess with the power supply paid the price—with fists and fury
Kelvin Muthie Githinji and Hezekiah Karimi were caught red-handed tampering with Kenya Power meters in Kianjogu village, and what followed was nothing short of a mob-style showdown. Furious residents pounced on the pair, delivering a vicious beating before police swooped in to save them from the crowd’s wrath.
The duo, accused of stealing tokens and disconnecting electricity meters worth over Ksh. 40,000, were dragged to the Kerugoya Law Courts where they faced Principal Magistrate Claire Wanyama. They boldly pleaded not guilty, despite being caught in the act, according to Kenya Power’s Kirinyaga Branch Manager, Eng. Ruto Kipkorir.

With tensions still high in the area, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) pushed for the suspects to be denied bond, warning that their lives were still at risk from enraged villagers. The court agreed—they’ll stay behind bars until May 23, 2025, when the case will be mentioned again.
“This kind of theft hurts the whole community. We won’t tolerate it,” warned Eng. Kipkorir.
He urged locals to report any fishy business involving tokens or KPLC corruption to nearby offices in Kerugoya or Mwea—before taking matters into their own hands again
