Milk Scandal Unveiled: Magistrate Exposes How Condemned Product Sneaked into Kenyan Market

Thursday, May 18th, Thika Senior Resident Magistrate Fredrick Koome exposed businessmen’s methods for smuggling spoiled milk onto the market.

After overseeing the destruction of toxic milk in Thika, the magistrate stated that shady businessmen were exploiting licensed vendors to smuggle unfit milk onto the market.

Koome disclosed to the media that the traders were posing as legitimately licensed vendors to deceive unsuspecting members of the public into purchasing spoiled milk.

Therefore, he advised Kenyans to purchase milk from authorized vendors and to expose shady dealers.

“I would like to urge the public to exercise extreme caution when purchasing milk. Purchase milk only from licensed suppliers.

Koome stated, “We are aware that there are individuals who take advantage of these licensed vendors.”

He added that the illegal enterprise’s operators were apprehended and brought before the Thika Law Courts, where they pled guilty to the charges against them.

Koome disclosed that the traders were apprehended during a law enforcement operation targeting illegal alcoholic beverages. The court ordered the recovery and destruction of sixty liters of toxic milk.

During the security officers’ sting operation, more than 160 liters of illicit alcohol were also confiscated, he added.

“We have poured over 160 liters of non-compliant alcoholic beverages and destroyed 60 liters of milk,” he emphasized.

He argued that the country was losing a fortune to these unlicensed dealers while directing law enforcement officers to intensify their operations.

Moreover, he asserted that condemned goods exposed Kenyans to the risk of contamination.

Tuesday, May 16th, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation raided a Nairobi estate and seized Ksh75 million worth of milk powder.

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) flagged the seized milk powder as unfit for human consumption, according to DCI.

How the trader smuggled the product from the Port of Mombasa to Nairobi before the shipment being seized remained a mystery.

How milk that had been condemned and was slated for destruction ended up in a godown in the Mowlem area of Umoja III is the current mystery that the detectives are attempting to solve, according to DCI.

Following the seizure of unfit milk powder, President Uhuru Kenyatta suspended 27 government officials after unauthorized sugar entered the market.

In 2018, the sugar was seized and deemed unfit for human consumption.
