A group of Meru County women leaders have refuted claims that the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza was a gender issue.

The women asserted that Mwangaza’s removal as governor of Meru and subsequent calamities were not due to her gender, but rather to her lack of experience and leadership ability.

They have requested that the Council of Governors (CoG) and national authorities refrain from interfering with County Assembly decisions.

They cited impeachment proceedings in Nairobi during the terms of 2017-2022 in which national leaders and the CoG did not intervene.

The union also requested that national leaders be guided by the President and his deputy’s decision to enable Meru residents to solve their problems while claiming that they are correcting election-related errors.

“The one year in office Kawira Mwangaza has proven to be the face of impunity, the face of destruction, the face of discrimination and she has also proven to be the face of disunity and that is why we, the women of Meru as a whole, support the impeachment of Kawira Mwangaza,” said Karimi Njeru.

“Tunaomba Senate tafadhali, tuliwaletea Kawira the very first time na mkaturudishia mkampatia chance ingine. Tafadhali Meru is in a mess, hakuna maendeleo unaeza sema hii imeletwa na gavana ni kama gavana wetu hajui kupanga vitu zake tafadhali, ni kama she is an illiterate hata siwezi sema she’s a semi-illiterate,” Mugure Wahome added.

The Court of Appeal in Nyeri handed Mwangaza a blow on Friday when a three-judge panel denied her petition to block her impeachment.

The justices Jamila Mohamed, Luka Kimaru, and Aggrey Muchelule have determined that the court lacks the authority to hear her petition.

“This court lacks jurisdiction in the first instance to consider the merits of the applicant’s application which sought conservatory orders before the impeachment process has run its constitutional and legal course,” reads the court documents.

Mwangaza was impeached by the Meru County Assembly on Wednesday, with all 59 MCAs present voting in favor of the petition to remove her from office. Ten MCAs were not present.

Among other offenses, they accused Mwangaza of misusing public funds, gross misconduct, and contempt of the county assembly and court.

As this is the second time since her impeachment in 2022, the Senate is anticipated to either uphold or overturn the impeachment.
