Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza impeached again
Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has faced her third impeachment by the county assembly, with 49 MCAs voting for her removal.
During Thursday’s vote on the impeachment motion, three MCAs abstained, while 17 others opposed the motion.
The impeachment motion was introduced by Deputy Majority Leader Zipporah Kinya, who outlined three main reasons: severe breaches of the constitution and laws, gross misconduct, and misuse of office.
Earlier on Thursday, security was heightened around the Meru County Assembly as MCAs prepared to discuss Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment.
The North Imenti Sub County Police commander led a police contingent deployed following reports of potential attacks and arson.

During the night, gunfire was reported as some attackers attempted to breach the assembly but were repelled by the strong police presence.
Last week, the impeachment motion was initially withdrawn after the mover submitted a withdrawal notice.
However, the motion was later reintroduced and approved by the assembly members.
“The assembly has granted Deputy Majority Leader Zipporah Kinya’s request to withdraw the impeachment motion against Governor Kawira Mwangaza, initially filed on July 17, 2024,” announced the Speaker.
The withdrawal occurred because the motion was outdated; it should have been debated and forwarded to the Senate within 10 days of the notice.
Additionally, the motion’s withdrawal rendered the ongoing court case moot, effectively nullifying it.
The day following the withdrawal, Deputy Majority Leader Zipporah Kinya submitted a new impeachment notice.
