Mbagathi Hospital Performs First Ever Cementless Total Hip Replacement Surgery
Mbagathi Hospital, located in Nairobi County, has accomplished the inaugural Cementless Total Hip Replacement procedure in the nation.
The surgical procedure took place on Tuesday in the recently revealed state-of-the-art operating room at the facility.
On Wednesday, the hospital revealed the breakthrough while praising the new leadership for supervising the groundbreaking initiatives.
“Yesterday, under the leadership of Dr. Athumani, an accomplished orthopedic surgeon, the surgical team at Mbagathi County Hospital achieved a groundbreaking milestone – the first-ever Cementless Total Hip Replacement surgery,” read a post on X.
“This remarkable procedure took place in the hospital’s recently modernized theatre, a testament to the transformative initiatives undertaken during the CEO’s tenure at the facility.”
The process conducted on a younger demographic with strong bone density entails the utilization of an uncemented ceramic hip replacement.

The ceramic surface is highly polished, enduring less wear compared to a metal surface, and additionally possesses scratch resistance.
The hospital acknowledged Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s contributions to ensuring that CEOs manage all Level Five Hospitals, as this initiative aims to encourage the donation of medical equipment.
“The idea of our Governor @SakajaJohnson and Super DG @JNjorogeMuchiri introducing CEOs to run level 5 hospitals was the best decision. Hospitals are being run more professionally. We are seeing Mbagathi receiving donations day in and day out, which are lobbied by the CEO,” stated Mbagathi.
Dr. Alex Irungu assumed leadership at Mbagathi in September along with three other chief executive officers tasked with overseeing the premier hospitals within the county.
Others picked were Frederick Otieno Obwanda ( Mutuini Hospital), Christine Kiteshu ( Pumwani Maternity), and Martin Alfred Wekesa Wafula (Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital).
