Mbadi: Treasury CS Nominee’s Ksh380 Million Worth Revealed
President William Ruto’s recent cabinet reshuffle has placed John Mbadi in the spotlight as the new candidate for the role of Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury.
Mbadi, a well-experienced politician with a notable background, is entering this position with an estimated wealth of Ksh380 million, which has naturally attracted both interest and examination.
Since his nomination for the Treasury role, Mbadi’s financial status has been a subject of debate. The former MP and currently nominated parliament member has explained that his considerable wealth has been accumulated over time through various professional endeavors.
He made this clarification during his review by the National Assembly’s Committee on Appointments, led by Speaker Moses Wetangula.
Mbadi’s career trajectory highlights a mix of political and financial expertise. With a Master of Business Administration from the University of Nairobi, his professional experience includes significant roles both in and outside of the political sphere.
Before his political career, he worked as a senior accountant and full accountant at the University of Nairobi from 1999 to 2005. His financial skills were further refined during his tenure as the Finance Director at Medair East Africa.
Mbadi’s political career is also noteworthy. He represented Gwassi as an MP starting from the 2007 General Election and later served Suba South in the 2013 and 2017 elections. His political roles have included leadership positions such as leader of the minority and assistant minister from 2012 to 2013.
He also chaired the Public Accounts Committee and participated in various important parliamentary committees, including the Budget Committee and the Public Investment Committee.

Mbadi’s nomination was announced on July 24, following President Ruto’s effort to fill the position left vacant by Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u. Ndung’u’s exit from the Cabinet was notably tied to widespread anti-government protests, setting a high-pressure context for Mbadi’s new role.
Mbadi’s qualifications are reinforced by his academic and professional background. His education at the University of Nairobi includes a Certified Public Accountant qualification and an MBA, supporting his suitability for the Treasury position.
His broad parliamentary experience further solidifies his ability to manage Kenya’s complex national budget.
The appointment comes amid significant financial revelations by other cabinet nominees. Roads, Transport and Public Works CS nominee Davis Chirchir reported a net worth increase to Ksh509.8 million, attributed to his tenure as Energy CS.
Similarly, Nominated CS Aden Duale has seen his wealth rise from Ksh851 million in 2022 to Ksh980 million in 2024.
Alice Wahome, the Cabinet Secretary nominee for the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development, has also reported a notable increase in her net worth, now at Ksh327 million.
