Mathe Wa Ngara Denied Bail in Drug Trafficking Case

In a narcotic trafficking case, Nancy Kigunzu, also known as “Mathe wa Ngara” on the streets, has been denied bail.

The court stated in its ruling on the parole application that the businesswoman’s involvement in drug trafficking makes her a flight risk.

Judge Njeri Thuku determined that releasing her on bond was not in the best interests of justice.

The businesswoman and Eugine Jumbo, the third accused, will remain in custody until the drug trafficking case is heard and decided.

Teresia Wanjiru, her co-accused, has been granted a cash surety of Ksh 50,000. She will be required to provide contact information for two individuals, one of whom is a blood relative, and to file a social report with the JKIA law courts within seven days.

Since her detention on August 21 in connection with a drug bust in the Ngara neighborhood of Nairobi, where Ksh.13.4 million in cash was also seized, ‘Mathe Wa Ngara’ has been detained.

Kigunzu, who collapsed during Monday’s bail hearing, told the court that her medical condition requires continuous monitoring and medication, and that she fears her condition will worsen if she is denied bail.

Kigunzu, who appeared before magistrate Njeri Thuku, denied allegations that she is a flight risk and will evade court proceedings.

Kigunzu’s attorney Danstan Omari stated that although she was detained in Nairobi’s central business district, her children were arrested in a residential home, arguing that she has a home and the police are aware.

She also refuted claims that she will interfere with witnesses in the case, stating that all of the witnesses are police officers and that she lacks the authority to do so.

Kigunzu’s co-accused Teresia Wanjiru and two others, who also sought parole, were also present in court.

The accused, through their attorneys, argue that the prosecution has not established compelling reasons to justify their continued detention.
