Mathe Wa Ngara: Businesswoman Arrested

Nancy Kigunzu, also known as “Mathe wa Ngara,” was detained in connection with a drug haul recovered in Ngara, Nairobi.

Nancy Kigunzu was arrested in Nairobi on Monday evening despite her efforts to obtain anticipatory bail to prevent her detention.
She will spend the night in police custody before being arraigned.

Kigunzu, who characterized herself as a law-abiding citizen in court documents, stated that she had never committed a crime in Kenya and that she had never been summoned by police or charged with a crime.

“The applicant is convinced that the timing of her arrest is intended to intimidate her and prevent her from continuing to operate her business in Kenya,” Kigunzu stated in her application.

Three additional individuals, including her two children, were detained in connection with the drugs recovered last week. On Tuesday, the anti-drug court will decide whether police may continue to detain them for an additional five days.

Kigunzu, also known as Mathe Wa Ngara, has been in the news over the past week due to the discovery of drugs and approximately Ksh13.4 million in currency believed to be drug proceeds by detectives.

During the raid, police arrested Teresia Wanjiru, who was later revealed to be the incorrect person, embarrassing the police.

She has requested that an injunction be issued pending a request for anticipatory release. The purpose of anticipatory bail is to prevent the apprehension of a suspect.

The media reported on Sunday that the woman identified as Wanjiru, who was mistakenly apprehended, apologized while police launched a manhunt.

On Monday, August 21, Wanjiru was scheduled to be arraigned in court for a hearing. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) wished to detain her for an additional five days.

Kigunzu had stated in her application that she would turn herself into the police if a fair and just legal proceeding is guaranteed.

“The 1st (DCI) and 2nd (IG Koome) respondents are abusing and misusing their arrest powers to harass, intimidate, and oppress the applicant,” the woman stated in her application.

The police accuse the woman of being a member of a drug gang that was busted last week as part of a countywide crackdown on drug traffickers.

The search in Ngara yielded cannabis, counterfeit cigarettes, and loads of currency concealed in sacks.
