Master Your KPLC Meter Update: Beat the August Deadline with This Step-by-Step Guide!

Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has launched a free prepaid meter update before the August deadline.

KPLC’s campaign is dubbed Update Token Meter Yako.

“We have started a campaign to update the prepaid token meter software. You will be guided via SMS to start the update process,” KPLC stated in a short message to customers.

What are the steps to update your token meter?

KPLC explained that customers will receive two codes via SMS.

“The first code is the reset code, and the second code is the update code,” it stated.

Sample of message you will receive

“Your meter 54601xxxxxx is scheduled for Update Token Meter Yako Campaign. Load any bought and unused tokens before you update your meter. Buy a new Electricity token for any amount to receive the Update Token Meter Yako codes & follow the instructions given. If the Update is successful, your meter will accept the Electricity token.”

Once a customer receives an SMS to update their meters from Kenya Power, they will follow the two steps:

  1. Key in code 1 to reset.
  2. Key in code 2 to update.

How many meters will be upgraded?

Kenya Power revealed that 7.4 million meters will be upgraded and warned that all prepaid meters not upgraded by the August deadline will not accept electricity tokens.

The update, which is free of charge, is crucial for customers to continue enjoying uninterrupted electricity services.

“A total of 7.4 million prepaid meters are targeted for this exercise. All prepaid meters that will not have been updated by the deadline date will stop accepting the tokens. Because of this, we have put in place elaborate measures to ensure that all our customers are fully assisted in updating their meters to continue to enjoy our services,” Kenya Power MD Joseph Siror said.

As of July 2, two million prepaid (token) meters had already been updated, representing about 30% success.

“The numbers are encouraging and we are happy to note that our customers have taken the call to update their meters seriously. We are almost at 30% of the targeted meters, and we are optimistic that all our prepaid customers will have updated their meters by the 31st August deadline,” said Siror.

Why Kenya Power will phase out postpaid meters

KPLC aims to minimize power theft and reduce meter reading expenses by shifting consumers to pre-paid meters.

The electricity distributor noted that all consumers in rural areas will have to transition to using smart meters in the long term.

Kenya Power recorded a KSh 3.2 billion net loss for the full year ended June 2023, attributed to the weakening shilling and the high power purchase cost.
