Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood completed a controversial loan move to Getafe last week and trained with the La Liga side for the first time on Tuesday

Mason Greenwood’s newborn baby looks set to be kitted out in a Getafe strip following his father’s loan move to the La Liga side.

After it was confirmed the Manchester United striker would leave the club this summer, the 21-year-old sealed a season-long switch to Spain last Thursday. And on Tuesday, he joined his new teammates for a public training session at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez stadium.

And the club fanfare that greeted news of his signing last week continued, with the club sharing social media pictures and videos of the one-time England international emerging from the tunnel to raucous applause. Greenwood also took time to give high-fives to youngsters, with the footage captioned: “We love you, @masongreenwood.”

The player himself also spoke via Getafe’s official Twitter feed, his first public words since making his move. In another released video, he said: “Hi Getafe fans, it’s Mason here. I’m so happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started.”

Back in July, Greenwood confirmed on Instagram that his girlfriend had given birth to their first child. Posting a picture of the couple holding the hand of the new arrival, the caption simply read ‘11.07.23’ with a white heart emoji.

And now his partner has taken to Instagram to post a snap of a Getafe shirt, and shorts, for their baby. It has ‘Daddy’ on the back and the No 12, mirroring the squad number Greenwood has been given.

He wasn’t signed in time to appear in the club’s last-gasp 2-1 defeat at Real Madrid on Saturday but could make his debut at home to Osasuna this Sunday. And that’s despite continued criticism of the club from a Spanish domestic abuse charity.

Greenwood has not played professional football since January 2021 when he was arrested before later being charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and engaging in controlling and coercive behavior. All charges were dropped in February this year, with the Crown Prosecution Service citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence.

And on Saturday Ana Bella Estévez, of the Ana Bella Foundation, said of Madrid-based Getafe: “The club is setting a terrible example. Getafe executives should never have hired Mason Greenwood and should immediately overturn their decision.

“If you’re a public-facing organisation like Getafe there is no excuse to take a neutral stance on violence against women. You must take moral responsibility.”

On the Greenwood transfer, Getafe coach Jose Bordalas said: “It is a very delicate situation to trivialize this issue. Everyone knows what happened and the appropriate measures were taken, obviously, we can only talk about football.

“Regarding the other issues, I believe that the people and the relevant authorities did what they had to do and everyone knows how it ended with a non-conviction sentence therefore he is a free person, a footballer of a very high level, and who arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm and that we are obviously going to help him so that he recovers back to his best level.”
