Manchester United Epic Comeback WIN!
Marcus Rashford leads Manchester United to an epic comeback win on derby day – 6 talking points
MAN CITY 2-1 MAN UTD: Marcus Rashford scored again to defeat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Old Trafford, following up on Bruno Fernandes’ equalizer after Jack Grealish opened the scoring.
Marcus Rashford led Manchester United to a derby-day comeback victory over Manchester City, igniting a potential Premier League title challenge.
After Citizens substitute Jack Grealish opened the scoring in the second half, the Red Devils won 2-1 at home. Erik ten Hag’s men quickly found their fighting spirit to win their eighth consecutive game at Old Trafford, as Rashford – who appeared to be injured at halftime – continued his red-hot form after Bruno Fernandes equalized in controversial circumstances.

Pep Guardiola’s side could be eight points behind league leaders Arsenal by the end of the weekend after losing for the second time in four days to Southampton in the EFL Cup quarter-finals. It was a watershed moment for the city’s red quarter.
Here are six points to consider from Old Trafford.
1. Ten Hag Shaw
If you ask Manchester United fans who their season’s best player has been, many will say Lisandro Martinez. After a difficult start to life in the Premier League, the £57 million center-back began to thrive in Erik ten Hag’s side and went on to win the World Cup with Argentina in December.
But, since returning to Manchester, he’s only made one start, in Tuesday’s EFL Cup quarter-final win over Charlton Athletic. That’s because Luke Shaw, who initially deputized for Martinez in his post-World Cup absence, has excelled in a makeshift position, and his form has persuaded Ten Hag to stick with him for this one and pair him with Raphael Varane – even against Erling Haaland.

“They [Varane and Shaw] played well together the last couple of games, a lot of clean sheets,” Ten Hag told MUTV before the game. “In addition, Licha Martinez returned from the World Cup with few games. He played 90 minutes against Charlton, but big games are needed.”
2. Haaland’s new position
When Erling Haaland chose Manchester City over a slew of other enticing European suitors in the summer, it begged the question: how would he fit into Pep Guardiola’s system? For much of the season, however, Guardiola has been adapting to Haaland.
The Norwegian powerhouse has rarely played as the type of striker we’ve come to expect to lead City’s attack over the past six years, instead skirting the offside line and playing on the last man, scoring a whopping 27 goals as a result. However, it was clear within the first 15 minutes that Haaland was attempting something novel.
Dropping deep in the build-up and attempting to link play, the Golden Boot favorite resembled former Citizens Sergio Aguero or Gabriel Jesus more than his usual self. It gave Guardiola and co more possession but stifled their attack, as it took them 23 minutes to register their first shot, which was, of course, through Haaland.
3. Sort it out, Wout
Someone else is the most in-form player in the Premier League right now, for what feels like the first time since Haaland arrived. That man is Marcus Rashford, who has seven goals in his last six games and is the Red Devils’ talisman ahead of the World Cup break.
Unfortunately for the England international, his favorite match, derby day, did not begin as planned. Rashford collapsed to the ground in pain, clutching his hip, after squandering guilt-edged chances in the first half. The Mancunian hung on for the final six minutes of the half, but Antony appeared to be set to take his place at the break.

To everyone’s surprise, Anthony Martial came on at halftime, having passed a late fitness test to start. The French striker had only played in spurts throughout the first 45 minutes and was not at full strength, forcing Antony to take his place and lead a forward line desperate for reinforcements. Fortunately, new signing Wout Weghorst was present.
4. Jack the lad
Just as it appeared that Jack Grealish had established himself as a regular starter for City, the Birmingham-born ace was benched at Old Trafford in place of Phil Foden. Guardiola had seen enough and called on Grealish to make a difference, but that only lasted until the 57th minute.
The playmaker made an immediate impact and put the Citizens ahead with a simple header after a trademark Kevin De Bruyne cutback, as a £100 million player should. City flexed their muscles and broke through United’s defense, with De Bruyne shrugging off Casemiro and dinking a cross in towards Grealish, capitalizing on United’s sluggish start to the second half.
After evading Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the ex-Aston Villa captain had a simple task: nod beyond David de Gea for the visitors’ only goal of the afternoon. Grealish has one goal and three assists in his last four league games, and he’s finally putting up the numbers that many expected when he arrived 18 months ago.
5. Reprieve for the Red Devils
What would an exciting Premier League match be if there was no offside controversy? With just over 10 minutes remaining in normal time, United snuffed out an equalizer that will be debated all weekend.

Rashford looked certain to get on the end of a ball swept through the City back line by Casemiro and be flagged offside. However, the 25-year-old wisely let the ball go, allowing Bruno Fernandes to smash past Ederson and tie the game at 1-1. The Citizens vehemently appealed, but under current law, Rashford did not directly interfere, so the goal stood and Old Trafford shook with joy – and it was only going to get better for the home fans.
6. Rashford is on a roll.
Marcus Rashford MBE now has eight goals in seven games! Just as the Red Devils were level, game-changing substitute Alejandro Garnacho decided to take the game to City and test their shaky defense, as he assisted Rashford for the winner after his first delivery was blocked.

A simple finish for the in-form Manc turned the game on its head, with Ten Hag storming down the touchline in celebration and the Citizens stunned. There is now only one point separating the two Manchester clubs in the table, and United will be eyeing an unlikely title challenge.
