Man Handed 20 Years in Prison for Shooting Kenya Power Staff With Arrow

A man who attacked and shot a Kenya Power employee with an arrow in 2024 has been handed a 20-year jail term.

The ruling was delivered by Chief Magistrate Paul Wechuli at the Kithimani Magistrateโ€™s Court, who described the act as deliberate and calculated.

โ€œThe accused knowingly loaded his bow, aimed, and shot the complainant. This was not mere preparationโ€”it was an attempted killing that was only stopped when onlookers restrained him,โ€ ruled the magistrate.

The prosecution, led by Fred Kimathi and James Gachoka, presented strong evidence, including testimony from five eyewitnesses. The accused did not dispute their accounts.

The incident happened on June 7, 2024, at Kithendu village in Yatta Sub-County, Machakos. A Kenya Power team was pruning trees that were interfering with power lines after an outage in the area.

When the staff arrived at the suspectโ€™s homestead, they identified an avocado tree that was touching the power lines and began pruning. The homeowner protested, but the workers explained the pruning was necessary to restore electricity to the community.

Angered, the suspect rushed into his house, returned with a bow and arrows, and shot the Kenya Power employee in the abdomen. He attempted to shoot again, but villagers intervened and broke his bow.

The injured worker was rushed to Matuu Level 4 Hospital, where doctors successfully removed the lodged arrow through surgery.

In his judgment, Magistrate Wechuli emphasized that the victim was simply doing his official duty and had no personal conflict with the accused.

โ€œThe accused allowed his tree to interfere with a power line, disrupting electricity for the entire village. Instead of cooperating, he viciously attacked the worker. Such barbaric behavior deserves a strong deterrent sentence,โ€ he ruled.
