Malala’s Challenge to Omar’s UDA Appointment Rejected
Cleophas Malala, recently removed as UDA Party Secretary General, has faced another obstacle as the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) rejected his bid to stop Senator Hassan Omar from assuming the position.
Malala was ousted during a National Executive Committee meeting led by National Chairperson Cecil Mbarire after weeks of political conflict, where Malala was accused of undermining the party.
On Tuesday, PPDT Chairman Desma Nungo denied Malala’s request to block Omar from taking office pending the hearing of Malala’s application contesting his removal.
Despite recognizing the urgency, Nungo scheduled the matter for mention on August 13 for further directions.
Malala has filed a lawsuit against Party Chairperson Mbarire, the UDA Party, and has named Omar as an interested party.
This legal defeat came just hours after the Registrar of Political Parties confirmed Malala’s removal and appointed Omar as the acting Secretary General, as directed by the party’s National Executive Committee.
The Committee instructed the National Elections Board to make necessary changes and continue with the first phase of grassroots elections in other counties.

“The Party will implement a series of governing and administrative measures to accelerate its agenda and set a distinct path of inclusive, participative, and consultative organization,” the statement added.
Malala was ousted despite seeking a court order to prevent his removal. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, in an interview on vernacular radio stations on Sunday, expressed his displeasure at not being consulted about Malala’s removal.
“Malala was removed from the ruling party at 5 am. I was not informed about the meeting that decided to oust him,” Gachagua said.
“My aides informed me that the meeting was held at 5 am and the decision was made. This should not happen because this is the ruling party,” he added. Gachagua stressed that such issues should be managed with respect and decorum, especially given UDA’s status as the ruling party.
“Let us maintain respect and decorum because such issues will only lead to more conflicts in the country. We already have people opposing the Presidency, others from GenZ, and the finance bill, and now we want to create conflicts within the party. Let us calm down and avoid creating more conflicts as we already have enough.”
He urged President William Ruto to unite all factions, including himself, the party, and other leaders, for the nation’s development.
