Malala to Sue ODM Over Protests: UDA Sec Gen Vows

Following Monday’s demonstrations in Kisumu, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Secretary General Cleophas Malala has threatened legal action against the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Malala claimed on Citizen TV’s News Night Show on Tuesday that the Raila Odinga-led party had hired thugs to torch and destroy the newly opened UDA offices in Kisumu.

Therefore, he stated that he would write to the Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu, and instruct the party’s attorney to file a lawsuit in the High Court to hold ODM responsible for the damage caused on Monday.

“It’s unfortunate that ODM-hired protesters went to our UDA office in Kisumu and set it on fire,” he said.

“We will write to the Registrar of Political Parties to ensure that ODM is held accountable for these heinous acts; they must pay and compensate the owners of the vehicles that were set on fire yesterday, and this behavior must cease.”

He added, “I am the one who will be writing to the Registrar of Political Parties and instructing our party lawyer to file a lawsuit against ODM because this must end because we are establishing a precedent that when you are unhappy with someone, you destroy their political party offices.”

The former senator from Kakamega also stated that he would ask the court to halt the distribution of funds to political parties until his case is resolved.

“We will also ask the high court to suspend the disbursement of funds to political parties until this case is heard and decided, as we do not wish to set a precedent,” he explained.

Malala also reaffirmed that the recent move by President William Ruto’s party to establish offices in Kisumu, a political stronghold for Odinga, would not be derailed by the protests on Monday.

He assured the citizens of Kisumu that the UDA offices would be rebuilt within the week.

“We are informing the residents of Kisumu that we will return on Tuesday to repaint…this is the ruling party.” This is not an ordinary party. The grassroots membership drive will continue, and Kisumu will be painted yellow, he stated.
