Maina Njenga Responds to Gachagua’s Crackdown on Mungiki, Other Illegal Groups

On Sunday, ex-Mungiki chief Maina Njenga rejected Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s accusations about the revival of the feared group, deeming the statement incorrect.

In an interview, Njenga expressed that Gachagua’s directive for a crackdown is unwarranted as the group is no longer operational.

Njenga emphatically denied the assertion made by the country’s second-in-command that the sect has been causing chaos in various regions of the country in recent times.

“I want to tell the people of Kenya, this is propaganda being conducted by some of these leaders,” he stated.

“I want people to stop listening to propaganda, there is no word or group like Mungiki. These are things of the past, now we want to know how Kenyans will live,” he added.

Njenga elaborated that while the government expressed concern about purportedly unlawful youth associations, the opposition was actively striving to reduce the expense of daily life.

In the same interview, Njenga expressed a contrasting view with opposition leader Raila Odinga, who had voiced criticism against President William Ruto for sending young people abroad for employment.

The political strategist expressed backing for the exportation of talent due to the absence of such opportunities within the country.

“I have no problem with this, let the Kenyans go work and send money back home. Let everyone look for work where possible,” he added.

Maina Njenga’s remarks were prompted by Gachagua’s directive on Wednesday, which instructed strict action against all illicit organizations within the nation.

The Deputy President, upon issuing the directive, cautioned that the government would make every effort to safeguard lives and property.

“This is a country of rule of law. We shall not allow criminal gangs to form and destabilize this region,” he stated.

The Second in Command also issued a stern warning to leaders financing such groups emphasising that the government would stamp them out.
