Two Tanzanians with ties to Al Shabaab, an Al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist organization, were apprehended in Moyale on Friday, July 14, after they strayed from their intended route to Somalia.

According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the foreigners relied on a Swahili-scribbled notebook for directions to the Kenya-Somalia border.

Detectives clarified that the inexperienced recruits were unfamiliar with the Kenyan terrain and became disoriented while attempting to follow the booklet’s directions.

As a result of the confusion, the two found themselves in the custody of security officers patrolling the area, as the government had dispatched additional personnel to the area in response to an increase in assaults.

A portion of the statement read, “They were using a Swahili-scribbled notebook to guide their movement from Tanzania to Jilib, Somalia.”

Three additional suspect Tanzanian recruits were also detained in Garissa County.

Detectives revealed that residents of Garissa initially raised the alarm after observing the new faces, prompting them to notify the police.

In a separate proceeding, a court in Mombasa is trying two terror suspects arrested in 2016.

“The two will face various charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, including, among others, directing the commission of a terrorist act, recruiting members of a terrorist group, soliciting for the commission of a terrorist act, and promoting a terrorist act,” the statement said.

Therefore, Kenyans were advised to maintain vigilance and disclose any terrorism-related suspicions.

The investigations and prosecution of the suspects followed a spate of attacks in which dozens of people were killed. On June 24th, for example, five persons were killed during an attack in Lamu.

Consequently, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki ordered the closure of the Somalia border, which had been partially reopened commencing on May 15.
