“Lock Him Up!” Kenyan MPs Explode as Gachagua Branded a Threat to National Peace — Accused of ‘Inciting Bloodshed’ and Acting Like a ‘Madman in a Suit’
Kenyan Members of Parliament on Tuesday called on the Inspector General of Police to arrest and charge former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for alleged incitement.
The lawmakers raised concerns during a parliamentary session, pointing to a recent media interview where Gachagua warned the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure the 2027 elections are fair. He reportedly compared possible post-election violence to a “Christmas party,” a statement many MPs described as dangerous.
Minority Leader Junet Mohamed led the motion, demanding that firm action be taken against the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader.
“We’ve heard reckless statements from the former DP that are clearly stirring tensions—especially in places like Wamunyoro and Mathira,” Junet said. “Leaders must choose dialogue over division. Words carry weight, and his are fueling unrest.”
Junet also criticized security agencies for failing to act.
“This is the same man we once impeached—and now he’s back, spreading hate and pushing for conflict. Just last week, he told musicians to stay silent unless they back a political agenda,” Junet added. “He may wear a suit, but his behavior is completely out of control.”
Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah agreed, urging the Police IG Douglas Kanja to uphold the law and questioning why Gachagua ignored a summons by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).

“As Parliament, we must not only speak out—we must demand action. The law should be applied fairly, without fear or favoritism,” Ichung’wah stated. “The NCIC must work closely with the police to hold him accountable. No one is above the law.”
Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro went further, suggesting Gachagua undergo a mental health evaluation.
“Every time he talks, it’s all about himself and one region. Something is clearly wrong, and he should see a psychiatrist,” Osoro said. “Law enforcement has been too soft on this matter. If this happened under the previous administration, he’d be in court already, flanked by a dozen lawyers.”
Junet concluded by pledging to introduce a motion or petition in Parliament to block Gachagua from holding any public office in Kenya.
“If he wants to lead a party or seek public funds under the Political Parties Act, that still makes him a state officer. We’ll seek to bar him from any public role—not just in Kenya, but he can try Tanzania, Uganda, or even Somalia,” Junet said.
