List of Politicians Grilled by DCI Over Funding Protests Allegations
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has ramped up its investigation into allegations of funding protests, zeroing in on two United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Members of Parliament, James Gakuya of Embakasi North and Benjamin Gathiru of Embakasi Central.
The DCI has secured court orders to inspect phone numbers associated with the two MPs after intelligence reports indicated their potential role in funding individuals who infiltrated the Gen Z protesters.
Last week, both legislators obtained court orders to prevent their arrest following questioning by DCI detectives.
This move intensifies the scrutiny of political figures allegedly linked to recent anti-government demonstrations.
In a related inquiry, police interrogated former Embakasi West MP George Theuri, former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s private secretary, Munene wa Mumbi, last Monday.
These individuals are also under suspicion for their involvement in organizing and funding the protests.
Legal representative Shadrack Wambui stated that the leaders are presumed to have ties to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, leading to their questioning.

“They were alleged to be sponsoring these anti-government protests and having connections with the deputy president of Kenya, prompting the government’s questioning,” Wambui elaborated.
In a roundtable interview with vernacular stations, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua revealed that Gathiru was confronted by DCI officers at Kenol, who confiscated his mobile phones.
Regarding Gakuya, the deputy president mentioned that the DCI questioned the legislator about a meeting at Hotel Boulevard in Nairobi, which Gachagua says was to plan for the UDA elections.
Lawyer Danstan Omari added insights into the internal dynamics within the UDA, hinting that the investigations might be politically driven.
“They are now targeting the internal strife within UDA, with one faction led by His Excellency the President and Raila Odinga’s team, and the other faction being Gachagua, now seen as an outsider,” Omari stated.
The ongoing investigations have underscored the deepening divisions within the ruling party and raised questions about the political motivations behind the allegations.
As the DCI’s probe continues, the involvement of prominent political figures highlights the complexities of the current political landscape in the country.
