Kware Youth Who Were Retrieving Bodies at Dumpsite Decry Harassment by DCI
A section of youth who formed part of the search mission personnel at the Kware dumpsite where multiple mutilated bodies have been found now claim they’re under intense intimidation and threats from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives.
The youth, who were involved in retrieving the body parts at the Kware quarry, say they have been living in fear following constant calls with strange numbers by people they strongly believe are State operatives.
The volunteer search party said the officials have even arrested some of their members as part of an intimidation scheme while telling them to stay away from where bodies were being retrieved two months ago.
Speaking at the Mukuru Community Justice Centre offices in Nairobi, flanked by several human rights activists on Friday, they’re now demanding the resumption of the retrieval exercise as they claim the move to send them packing from the dumpsite is a ploy to conceal more body parts still inside the quarry.

“Tumekuwa frontline ku-coordinate mambo ya Kware, na iintimidation tumepata ni kama kuulizwa mahali tumetoa funding, mahali tunapata pesa zetu za kufanya shughuli za kawaida, na tunafanya kazi na kina nani,” said one of the volunteers.
“DCI pia ilisema ati ukitoa mwili hapo, wewe ndio utakuwa accountable…ati wewe ndio uliiweka hapo kwa sababu wewe ndio umeiona mahali iko. Tunapata masimu kutoka numbers hatuelewi, na ukiongea nao wanakutishia tu.”
Their remarks were also echoed by bereaved families who said they were stranded and couldn’t continue with the burial process since other body parts were missing and the exercise was suspended by the State.
Emmanuel Ogongo, whose sister Roseline’s body was retrieved from the dumpsite and taken to the Nairobi Mortuary, said:
“Tunaomba hiyo maneno iharakishwe ndio tupate mwili tupeleke nyumbani. DNA results pia hatujapewa, tumeambiwa tungoje kwanza.”
