Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) aims to recruit international physicians to assist in preventing an imminent healthcare crisis at its 650-bed establishment.

As per Professor Olive Mugenda, who serves as the Chairperson of the KUTRRH Board, the industrial action has left numerous patients in a predicament, including individuals battling cancer who are on the verge of commencing chemotherapy.

“Some people have begun chemotherapy and are at home and some need these treatments urgently,” Prof.Mugenda told journalists on Tuesday.

“After consultation with the board, we thought it wise–and we have permission from the government to hire some foreign doctors to help us.”

Up to now, the establishment has engaged the expertise of four cancer specialists hailing from Ethiopia, Malawi, and Tanzania, facilitating the resumption of vital services.

As per Professor Mugenda, thanks to the recent additions to the staff, the institution managed to administer around 40 chemotherapy sessions on Monday.

“They are clinical oncologists from East Africa, they are trained and are already doing a good job,” She added.

Prof Mugenda mentioned that most of the striking doctors at the hospital have been served with letters of dismissal or suspension concerning their future.

She mentioned that KUTRRH, designed for 250 doctors, was functioning with just 82 as some staff members had gone on strike.

“We do not know if the striking doctors will be back, those who stopped working we served them with letters of dismissal and some have suspension letters,” she added.

“The ones we hired will remain even if the others come back, and if they do come back, those with suspension letters will need to face a disciplinary committee.”
