KRA Launches eTIMS Lite for Small Businesses; How it Works
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced an electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) designed to enhance the convenience for customers when submitting their invoices to the tax authority.
On Monday, March 4, the authority announced that the newly implemented system encompasses all types of businesses, irrespective of their size, including those operating in the informal sector.
Individuals or entities that are not registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) will have the capability to create and send their invoices through the platform.
“Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) would like to remind the public that all persons carrying on business including those in the Informal Sector and Small Businesses are required to electronically generate and transmit their invoices to KRA via the electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS),” read the statement dated March 4 in part.
According to KRA, eTIMS Lite will be accessible through the eCitizen platform as well as the USSD code, where Kenyans will be able to acquire services by dialing *222#.

Business professionals and traders who are the intended audience can conveniently use the streamlined system by visitingย www.ecitizen.kra.go.keย to utilize the online invoicing solution.
To increase utilization, tax authorities have actively focused on promoting awareness and tax education through ongoing collaboration with stakeholders, aiming specifically at individuals within the informal sector.
Farmers, jua kali traders, artisans, and other individuals are among the specific taxpayers being focused on.
“KRA wishes to invite taxpayers and representative bodies who may experience challenges adopting the existing solutions to reach out to further explore solutions tailored to cater to their specific needs,” added the Authority.
“One such consideration is the reverse invoicing solution where a seller can/may give consent or authority to the buyer to issue invoices on their behalf.”
The system will provide sellers with the option to permit buyers to generate invoices on their behalf, offering greater flexibility.
Entrepreneurs with small businesses and individuals operating in the informal sector are anticipated to submit their tax returns monthly.
