KRA Justifies Mombasa Governor Radio Raid: Controversy Unfolds
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has defended its recent raid on Rahma Broadcasting Corporation, owned by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir.
In a statement released to the media, the tax authority stated that the operation followed proper protocols, including sending demand notices to the company.
KRA claims that Rahma Broadcasting Corporation failed to fulfill its tax responsibilities and did not respond to the agency’s attempts to address the issue.
“Following a comprehensive review, it was determined that Rahma Broadcasting Limited was non-compliant in filing and paying various tax obligations,” the statement from KRA’s South Region Coordinator reads.
“Engagements with the management of Rahma Broadcasting Limited have been ongoing since taxes became due and payable. Commitments were reached, however, the taxpayer did not honor them. Today’s activity at Rahma Broadcasting Limited is therefore part of normal KRA’s Enforcement operation.
After the raid, Nassir hinted that the unexpected attention from tax authorities was linked to his recent ban on khat leaves, commonly referred to as muguka, in Mombasa, suggesting a connection between the two events.

“Leo watu wamekuja na vitisho. Hii mambo ya kila mmoja anakuja hapa and then ukiuliza wadosi wao wanakuambia ya kwamba sio wao wamewatuma. It means that people are taking orders from elsewhere,” said Nassir.
Nassir, visibly irritated and resolute, referenced four court rulings supporting the ban, asserting his refusal to succumb to demands to lift it for the benefit of Mombasa residents.
Following this, Nassir’s political party, ODM, issued a statement condemning the authorities for their purported involvement in the matter.
“The ODM party wishes to condemn the weaponization of state agencies like KRA to harass and intimidate Governor Nassir and his colleagues who are only looking out for those they represent. The Party stands with the Governor in his efforts to rid Mombasa of the drug menace once and for all,” stated ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.
