KPLC Suffers System Failure, Causes Widespread Blackout

Kenya Power has attributed the nationwide blackout that occurred on Tuesday, May 16 evening to a system failure.

The utility company stated in a statement that the blackout affected portions of the country, including North Rift, Western, and parts of Nairobi.

The explanation from the power transmission company followed a string of complaints from Kenyans in different regions of the country.

However, the utility company assured Kenyans that restoration efforts were underway.

“Parts of North Rift, Western, and Nairobi have lost power supply due to a system disturbance affecting one of our major power transmission lines,” the statement read in part.

“Our engineers are working to restore power to the affected areas as soon as possible,” the statement continued.

Buruburu, Umuja, and Westlands were among the regions of Nairobi affected by the blackout.

“Notice that there is a problem in your area. Our team is currently working to restore supplies. “We regret the inconvenience,” KPLC responded to the power outage at Umoja Estate.

After a series of maintenance, the country’s electricity provider experienced a power outage.

Trans Nzoia, Kiambu, Vihiga, and Embu County were among the locations that received maintenance on Tuesday, May 16.

To address power outages, KPLC launched a nationwide anti-vandalism campaign.

In addition to addressing vandalism, the Energy Ministry stated that the operation aimed to improve the quality of electricity supply to various households.

Reportedly, illegal connections degraded the quality of the electricity supply.

According to officials from the Ministry of Energy, illegal connections pose an electrocution risk to users.

To address the power outages, President William Ruto issued a directive to the cabinet to overhaul the management of the utility company.
