KNEC Addresses Reports of Releasing KCSE Grades of Student Who Died Before Exams

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has cautioned individuals spreading false information not to disseminate damaging claims that could harm the education sector.

As the ongoing dispute surrounds the recently conducted Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has raised concerns over allegations suggesting that it assessed a student who had passed away before taking the exams.

On Friday, the examination board had to respond to accusations of assessing the student’s performance in biology and assigning an X for other exams, indicating the student’s absence during those particular papers.

KNEC, classifying the post as false, stated that the mentioned outcomes did not originate from its platform.

A screengrab of flagged KCSE results alleged to be that of a dead student who did not sit the exams

The widely circulated post on social media asserted that KNEC supposedly granted the student a Biology grade of D minus.

“This boy reportedly died before KCSE exams began, but somehow he pulled a mama Rosa, resurrected, sat the biology paper, and scored a D-, maybe because he couldn’t revise in the grave because of darkness,” claimed a tweet.

“The only thing that works efficiently in this country is corruption. The country is in the hands of quacks,” the tweet added.

KNEC has faced mounting pressure to elucidate KCSE exam results following complaints from students and schools about discrepancies in the grades obtained when downloading the results.

In the images posted by involved individuals, numerous schools and students encountered inconsistent outcomes upon accessing the KNEC portal. One instance involved a student who obtained divergent results, downloading his grades twice and receiving an A- in one instance and a B+ in the other.

“Parents do not sleep. The results are changing every minute. You blink, it goes to A, blink again, and it will be an E,” Homa Bay Member of Parliament George Kaluma alleged.

Certain individuals from Kenya raised additional concerns about why the outcomes were designated as provisional.

“They are changing results all the time like Jose Carmago’s election results,” Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai trolled the exam body.

In the interim, President William Ruto has instructed a thorough inquiry into the situations of 3,143 students who enrolled for KCSE exams but did not participate in the actual examinations.
