KNEC Addresses Concerns Over KCPE Results: Confirms Inaccuracies in SMS but Portal Results Accurate
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has responded to several parental concerns regarding the inaccuracies that were discovered in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination results that were just released.
KNEC stated in a statement that it had evaluated the appeals and concerns of concerned parents who claimed that the grades and marks in Kiswahili were misaligned with those in Kenya Sign Language on some of the results.
In certain instances, the grades assigned in the subjects of Science, Social Studies, and Religious Education were inaccurately truncated, lacking the anticipated plus (+) or minus (-) signs.
Due to configuration issues, KNEC clarified that these errors only affected SMS results, but confirmed that results on the KNEC portal were accurate.
Furthermore, KNEC noted that a mere 133 candidates were impacted by failing to meet minimum requirements in certain subjects, such as Kiswahili and English.
“These cases have all been addressed and results for the affected candidates updated appropriately.”
Additionally, KNEC addressed an incident in which every candidate in a particular school earned the same Science grade of 75.

Upon reviewing all examination center results, the Council discovered no evidence that the institution had engaged in exam malpractice.
“Science is a multiple-choice question paper, thus making it possible for the candidates to get identical marks,” KNEC stated.
“Though this may be assumed to be an examination irregularity, it is not adequate evidence for KNEC to sanction the results for candidates without a supporting report that cheating happened during the administration of the examination.”
Candidates who had expressed concerns regarding their results were advised by KNEC to visit their respective institutions to obtain the official provisional results slips.
Rule 27 of Legal Notice 131 of the KNEC Rules of 2015 concerning the marking of examinations, release of results, and certification stipulates that candidates have thirty days from the date of examination result release to file an appeal of the results.
