KNBS Report Reveals Richest and Poorest Counties
Nairobi County maintained its grip on its status as the wealthiest county in 2022 with an estimated economy of Ksh3.2 trillion, the latest data published by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) shows.
According to the data, Kiambu County ranked second with an economy of Ksh721.2 billion, followed closely by Nakuru at Ksh600.5 billion.
Mombasa County secured the fourth position, with an economy valued at Ksh564.1 billion.
Meru had an economy of Ksh407.4 billion, and Machakos County followed with Ksh378.4 billion.
In Western Kenya, Kisumu County led as the wealthiest with an economy of Ksh312 billion, followed by Uasin Gishu (Ksh295 billion) and Kakamega County (Ksh276 billion).
Kilifi County secured the 10th position with an economy of Ksh254 billion.

“The results showed that counties with large commercial centers such as Nairobi City, Kiambu, Mombasa City, Nakuru City, and Machakos, had relatively high Gross County Product (GCP) compared to counties with predominantly rural settings.
“Nevertheless, counties with a wide range of economic activities, especially agricultural production such as Meru, Kakamega, and Nyeri also accounted for notable proportions of GCP to total GVA,” read the report in part.
Among the poorest counties, Isiolo was ranked at the bottom of the 47 devolved units with an economy of Ksh31 billion.
Samburu and Tana River counties were also among the poorest, with economies of Ksh33 billion and Ksh35 billion respectively.
Other counties in the bottom 10 were West Pokot (Ksh84 billion), Tharaka Nithi (Ksh77 billion), Marsabit (Ksh73 billion), Taita Taveta (Ksh70 billion), Garissa (Ksh68 billion), Mandera (Ksh63 billion), Wajir (Ksh61 billion), and Lamu (Ksh40 billion).
