Eliud Kipchoge criticized his compatriot Kelvin Kiptum’s record-setting performance at the Chicago marathon, asserting that he paved the way for the younger generation of athletes.

Friday during a press conference in Oviedo, Spain, Kipchoge stated that he was not astonished by Kiptum’s world-record performance.

In addition, he anticipated other athletes accomplishing the same feat, which was made possible by his stellar career.

“I was not surprised about [Kiptum] breaking the world record,” Kipchoge told the journalists.

“I was happy to see the record being broken. I am looking forward to seeing records being broken because I have shown them the way.”

While discussing his destiny, Kipchoge emphasized that his primary objective was to win the Olympic gold medal for the third consecutive time.

“I will be the happiest on earth to win an Olympic medal for the third time, back-to-back-to-back. It’s about making history; it’s about inspiring a generation.”

Kipchoge, arguably one of the finest marathoners of all time, has won 16 of the 18 marathons in which he has competed, including the prestigious London and Berlin marathons four times each. In addition, he has over ten significant works to his name.

Kipchoge held the World record for the marathon with a time of 2:01:09 at the Berlin marathon in September 2022 until Kiptum eclipsed it with a time of 2:00:35 at the Chicago Marathon on October 8, 2023.

After Kipchoge failed to congratulate him for breaking the record, a portion of Kenyans expressed their disapproval.

Kipchoge received the 2023 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports in Oviedo, Spain. The award acknowledged both his career accomplishments and his foundation’s efforts to promote education and environmental protection.

“It is an absolute honor to receive the Princess of Asturias Award. To be amongst a list of extraordinary laureates, all people from different walks of life. It motivates me in my goal to leave a legacy in this world through running since a running world is a more peaceful world, a happier world, and a more healthy world,” Kipchoge stated while receiving the award.

“I would like to thank Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias and her parents, Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain, for granting me this honor.”
