Kioni Speaks on Potential UhuRuto Reunion as Ruto’s Surprise Visit Sparks Political Speculation
President William Rutoโs unexpected visit to former President Uhuru Kenyatta on December 9, 2024, has sparked widespread speculation, with many suggesting a potential political โhandshakeโ could be in the works.
Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni and other leaders aligned with Uhuru dismissed rumors of a budding political alliance between the two leaders. Reports suggested that Uhuru might be offered four Cabinet slots, including the vacant Interior Ministry. However, Kioni clarified that Uhuru prefers fostering a vibrant opposition, as it enhances democratic growth.
According to Kioni, Uhuruโs engagement with Ruto shouldnโt be interpreted as a sign of an impending partnership. He noted that during his presidency, Uhuru often sought input from leaders outside the government without absorbing them into his administration, citing consultations with Raila Odinga during the Jubilee government as an example.

Despite the two leaders labeling their meeting as a discussion on national and regional matters, many Kenyans and political analysts speculated that it might signal a deeper collaboration. Reports hinted at Uhuru joining a โsuper broad-based government,โ possibly aligning with Raila Odinga and incorporating allies into Rutoโs administration as part of a strategy for the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, leaders allied with impeached former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed dismay over the Ichaweri meeting, perceiving it as an effort by Ruto to regain political influence in the Mt. Kenya region, which remains fraught with uncertainty.
Embakasi North MP James Gakuya firmly stated that the political stance of Mt. Kenya would remain unchanged despite the high-profile meeting. He urged Uhuru to maintain his dignity and warned against actions that might tarnish his legacy, emphasizing the regionโs longstanding grievances.
Amid this political drama, former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria called on Ruto, Uhuru, and Raila to unite and spearhead constitutional reforms to guide the nation forward.
